EXPECTATIONS FROM BRAND BUDHADEB BHATTACHARYA

With the resounding victory of the left front in West Bengal expectations are running high. A very good fallout of this years election is that they have prooved that without rigging or booth capturing the left front can hold their own. This speaks volumes about their infrastructure and liasoning down to the grassroot level. that is why expectations are riding high. it is this very same infrastructure that can be used to bring a RENNAISANCE in Bengal . send research and technology to agriculture. bring in the technocrat farmer . implement and make the PDS effective improve their civic sense; build public toilets and prevent West Bengal from becoming an open urinal. from this civic sense will automatically rise a pride and self esteem take a leaf from Punjab: learn to market your culture to prevent it from dying out. build up the film industry as an important industry that can bring in a lot of revenue instead of losing talent to Bollywood who is gaining at Kolkata's loss a...

KOLKATA ELECTIONS 2006

There is the smell of “kal baishakhi ” and elections in the air. And both are characterized by the lull before the storm. Of course the lull has been broken by small outbursts like stray comments and the sacking of not just one but two election observers at the Belgachia constituency. In the outskirts the news has been that the overall turnout in this years election is remarkable. Infact a funny incident which happened with my mother illustrates the definite conscious effort that is being taken to ensure fair elections this year . She was immediately accosted by the booth overseer who was bewidered by the stark difference in the facial features of the card and the card holder(leave alone the stark difference in sex). There is an undercurrent of suspense this year. A silent murmur that is doing the rounds – will th...

May Queen Ball @Army Officers' Institute ,Kolkata

The May Queen Ball 2006 held on 06/05/2006 at the AOI (Army Officers’ Institute), Kolkata , sponsored by Seagrams Blenders Pride, took off on a warm and windy note. With rising temperatures and rising humidity the strong gusts of breeze was quite a relief. The interactive Ball that “May Queen Ball” connotes has infact become a Beauty Pageant. This year strangely there were only 13 participants. Was it because it was clashing with Exam dates. Usually all participants belong to the under 20 age group. This time there were atleast 4 quite sporting ladies, married and near 30. I guess this is why the whole event had an odd charming mix of the formality of a sponsored event and the informality of a unit event. Local dance troupe “ The Challengers ” gyrating to numbers like Ganesh Hegde’s “Main Deewana”, “Kajra Re” formed the interludes. But no guesses for the real crowd puller. It was this lesser known singer named Akriti from Mumbai .. A glamorous bundle of oozing appeal and loads and loa...
