May Queen Ball @Army Officers' Institute ,Kolkata
The May Queen Ball 2006 held on 06/05/2006 at the AOI(Army Officers’ Institute), Kolkata,
sponsored by Seagrams Blenders Pride, took off on a warm and windy note. With rising temperatures and rising humidity the strong gusts of breeze was quite a relief. The interactive Ball that “May Queen Ball” connotes has infact become a Beauty Pageant. This year strangely there were only 13 participants. Was it because it was clashing with Exam dates. Usually all participants belong to the under 20 age group. This time there were atleast 4 quite sporting ladies, married and near 30.
I guess this is why the whole event had an odd charming mix of the formality of a sponsored event and the informality of a unit event. Local dance troupe “The Challengers” gyrating to numbers like Ganesh Hegde’s “Main Deewana”, “Kajra Re” formed the interludes. But no guesses for the real crowd puller. It was this lesser known singer named Akriti from Mumbai..
A glamorous bundle of oozing appeal and loads and loads of talent she literally had the crowds twisted around her little finger. With her incredible voice modulation, amazing versatility she crooned numbers from Shania Twain to Bhangra pop to oldies like Chura Liya, Mera naam chin chin choo to the recent hits of Salami Namaste and of course Kajra Re effortlessly.
In all, a lovely evening spent on the greens of AOI with a lovely cool breeze from the Maidan. Who cares who lost and won the crown.
